"On April 6, 2002, my friend Ben and I visited a little town called Gary, Indiana. It's a depressing place, really. As near as I can tell, the entire city's economy is based on heavy industry. The air is brown and thick, and on every horizon is a forest of power lines and smoke stacks. I don't think I would visit the place alone.

The industrial sites seemed somehow more inviting than the impoverished neighborhoods surrounding them. We visited two factories that day. The first one we actually spent an hour circling before we found a way in around the fence. In the process though, I found some pretty interesting stuff... (There's another half-disassembled factory in the neighboring lot.) ",

"After about an hour in the compound, a few construction workers began driving around in a rusty pickup truck, so we thought it was best to leave. We stopped for lunch, then drove for about an hour looking for our next site. We had a few false starts - our goal was to find something abandoned, since we didn't want to chance another run-in with employees. Finally, on the east end of town, we found a set of chimneys that weren't pouring out smoke... ",

"This place was quite a bit larger than the first location we visited. Same basic layout, but all the buildings were about half again as tall. It was in a strange state of disarray. Many sections of the buildings had collapsed, but we found a few rooms that were still in use - at least, the lights were still on. I can only assume they were being used as break rooms or machine shops for the remaining workers. The plant had certainly been shut down for quite some time. ",
